The official language of Iceland is Icelandic. It is a North Germanic language, closely related to Faroese and Norwegian. It is descended from Old Norse, the language spoken by the Norse settlers of Iceland in the 9th and 10th centuries.
Icelandic is notable for its conservative nature, having changed relatively little since the medieval period. This is due in part to Iceland's relative isolation and deliberate language preservation efforts. Because of this, modern Icelanders can still read the Icelandic%20Sagas written centuries ago.
The language has a complex grammar system, including four cases for nouns (nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive) and strong verb conjugations.
While most Icelanders speak English as a second language, Icelandic is widely used in all aspects of Icelandic society, including government, education, and media. There are ongoing efforts to protect the language from foreign influences and promote the use of Icelandic in new technologies.
